Alexa Chung flips 'On' switch for MTV

It's "High School Musical," starring Alexa Chung?

The host of MTV's new daily entertainment talk/variety show, "It's On With Alexa Chung," has teamed up with "High School Musical" star Monique Coleman to film a Wildcat-inspired sketch, just one of the several bits that will be featured this week on the show.

"It's On With Alexa Chung," premiering today at noon, is set to fill the daily slot left behind by the recently canceled "TRL." But unlike its predecessor, "It's On" isn't just a music video countdown show.

Instead, each hour-long live episode will feature interviews with celebrity guests, musical performances, pop culture news and comedy sketches.

Also, capitalizing on the popularity of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, "It's On" will weave in questions and content straight from the viewers at home for a more interactive experience.

Chung, a model and well-known TV personality in the U.K., is relatively new to audiences this side of the pond, but her dry sense of humor and laid-back attitude can be expected to win American fans soon enough.

"All the shows I'd worked on in the U.K. were usually quite tongue-in-cheek or irreverent, so I think MTV chose me because they wanted to inject that kind of freshness in the show," Chung told the Daily News. "Hopefully, they wanted me because they thought I'd be quite fun."

Chung's first guests include Jack Black and Michael Cera, stars of the upcoming film "Year One," as well as musical guest Soulja Boy.

Today also kicks off MTV's new comedy block, featuring three new series: "DJ & the Fro" at 5, "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" at 5:30 and "Silent Library" at 6.

Chung says her interview style is less about hitting the marks with celeb guests ("When's the album coming out?" "How did you like working with so-and-so?") and more about just having a conversation.

"I'd like to find out who they are and what they're like," said Chung. "It's fun to involve them in sketches and skits because it shows that they do have a sense of humor and not everyone has to be so
earnest and serious all the time."

As for her Twitter skills, Chung says she wasn't hired because "I'm the best Twitterer," but it definitely is part of her everyday life.

Though most of her dream guests you could only book through a seance, there is one living rock legend Chung would love to have in the studio.

"Courtney Love," she said. "Let's get Courtney Love back on MTV."
