Jessica Simpson is getting married to former NFL player Eric Johnson, and we have to ask ourselves whether or not her engagement is going to get her career back on track.

Indeed, Tony Romo's ex-girlfriend seems like she's more famous these days for her social life - and for just being hot - than she is for the music career that made her a star in the late 1990s.

You do remember her music career, right?

No?

Well then, this slideshow is for you. Here's a quick recap of Jessica Simpson's life over the last decade.

No?

Well then, this slideshow is for you. Here's a quick recap of Jessica Simpson's life over the last decade.

Begin SlideshowSimpson became a pop superstar back in 1999, when she released a single called "I Wanna Love You Forever" that made it as far as No. 3 on the Billboard charts.

Not long after that, her debut album Sweet Kisses was released, and she started dating fellow pop music star Nick Lachey, from the boy band 98 Degrees.

From there, a new trend would begin that would come to define both her music and her personal life.
Despite the fact her first album Sweet Kisses went double platinum, Columbia Records execs felt that Simpson simply did not have the same kind of sexy appeal as her contemporaries Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Her follow-up album Irresistable dropped in 2001 and sold 127,000 copies in its first week. It has sold 3 million copies since.

In other words, it would appear that Columbia's decision to go sexier worked.

Simpson and Lachey, meanwhile, had split momentarily following a two-year relationship, but would reconcile things after the 9/11 attacks.

Claimed Simpson, " "After 9/11, I knew that I never ever wanted to be away from Nick ever for the rest of my life."

Their make-up laid the seed for a media crossover.
Simpson and Lachey eventually got married in 2002, and she famously went on record saying that she had remained a virgin until marriage.

If she says so.

In any case, their married life was document in an MTV reality show called Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The show originally aired in the summer of 2003.

The show became a pop culture phenomenon, and is credited as the key force in making Jessica Simpson a household name.

But we can also look back on it now and pinpoint it as the reason we now view Simpson as a bit of a ditz.

After all, who can forget the infamous "Chicken of the Sea" exchange?

Simpson also released an album in August of that year called In This Skin, which did not sell as well as Irresistable.
Simpson made the jump from reality star to movie star in the summer of 2005 as Daisy Duke in the Hollywood remake of The Dukes of Hazard. She was later nominated for a Razzie for worst actress.

Nevertheless, the film was No. 1 at the box office in its opening weekend, officially heralding Simpson as one of the biggest multimedia stars on the planet.

She also recorded a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" for the film's soundtrack, which peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Top 100.
In November of 2005, mere months after the success of The Dukes of Hazzard, Simpson and Lachey announced they had separated, a move that obliged a flurry of tabloid speculation that had been swirling for months.

The two filed for divorce in December, citing "irreconcilable differences."

It was finalized in June of 2006, and Simpson was officially single once again.
Simpson's name was linked to several other big-name stars following her split from Lachey. Among her various liaisons was an on-and-off relationship with John Mayer, Dane Cook, and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine.

Meanwhile, her career began to crumble.

She switched from Columbia to Epic Records for her next album, A Public Affair. The album has sold just 300,000 copies domestically, a far cry from the success of her previous albums.

She also starred in her second Hollywood film opposite Dane Cook, Employee of the Month. Nobody saw the movie, and even fewer people thought it was any good. She was nominated for her second Razzie.

She also made headlines for botching some lyrics during a performance at a tribute to Dolly Parton.

Jessica Simpson conquered yet another frontier when she moved into the sports world by starting a relationship with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo in November of 2007.

The relationship was frowned upon by many Cowboys fans, who blamed Simpson for Romo's poor play on the field. Some went so far as to start calling her "Yoko Ono," who may or may not have broken up The Beatles.

Even President Bush talked of a "Jessica jinx" when the Cowboys lost to the Giants in the 2008 playoffs.

In the summer of 2008 Simpson, a native Texan, released a country single called "Come On Over." It was very popular right away, debuting at No. 41 on the charts, and peaking at No. 18 on the country music charts.

Do You Know, Simpson's first country album, was released late in 2008 and became the first No. 1 album of her career.

In July of 2009, it was reported that Simpson and Romo were officially ending their relationship, news that fairly satisfied Cowboys fans everywhere.

Earlier that year, Simpson's latest film Major Movie Star was released straight to DVD.

Early in 2010, Simpson announced that she would be producing her new album on her own. In addition, she was also on the prowl for more "intellectual" film roles.

She released the first Greatest Hits album of her career in October, a classic money grab that is usually reserved for well after a singer has heard the death knell of his or her career.

In May of this year, Simpson announced that she was dating former NFL tight end Eric Johnson, who had separated with his wife of five years in 2009.

About ten days ago, Nick Lachey announced that he was getting married to his longtime girlfriend.

How convenient then, that today's news that Simpson and Johnson are going to get married came so hot on the heels of Lachey's news?

So that brings us up to date. The now 30-year-old Simpson is heading towards her second marriage, and is going to take her second dance with an NFL product all the way.

So how about it, folks? Can Jessica Simpson's second marriage save her sagging career? Or are we going to continue to view her merely as an obnoxious socialite?
