The Nicholls State Colonels took the chicken way out of dealing with Louisiana Tech speedster Phillip Livas in last Saturday's 48-13 Bulldog win.
The Colonels refused to kick to one of the top return men in NCAA football.

Of the nine punts or kickoffs in the contest by NSU, just one went to Livas and it was a punt he returned for 6 yards. While the NSU decision devastated Livas' all-purpose yardage totals, the junior did manage four pass receptions for 85 yards, including a 50-yarder to open the second half that got the Bulldogs off and running.

"He only hit us with one big play ... it was a good call by them and we lined up on him wrong," NSU coach Jay Thomas said. "We had a new guy out there trying to cover him. We were very familiar with Livas, since he came from our neck of the woods. Our plan was to not kick the ball to him and make their offense earn everything they got."

That one play, however, was significant in coach Derek Dooley's eyes.

"Of course the first play helps. We hit the big play with Livas and it fed a little energy," Dooley said. "Give coach (Frank) Scelfo a lot of credit, we stayed very aggressive. They kept challenging us and we kept dropping back and chunking it down the field."

BETTER PLANS: Tech had a wildly successful turnout from its student body among the 19,400 folks who showed up to watch the Nicholls State beat down. There were reports, however, that it was difficult for the students to enter the stadium with just one place to scan their student IDs.

The Tech administration plans to make it more convenient for students at next Wednesday's 7 p.m. meeting with Hawaii in Joe Aillet Stadium. All three gates on the east side of the stadium are now equipped to scan Tech student IDs.

HOLIDAY SPIRIT: It could look like Christmas in north central Louisiana at the Hawaii game, since Tech officials are encouraging Tech fans to wear red in concurrence with the football team donning red jerseys for the contest.

Since the Warriors' main color is green it could make for a festive look on the field before the bloodletting begins between two teams that aren't fond of each other.
