Pelini refutes rumors that Taylor Martinez has quit the ‘Huskers

It’s not been the greatest of 36 hours or so for Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini.

Not only did his Nebraska Cornhuskers drop a 9-6 decision to Texas A&M — a game that featured 16 penalties called on the Cornhuskers versus two against the Aggies, incidentally — but the head coach was publicly dressed down by his chancellor for the “decorum” he displayed during the loss. Now, Pelini has been forced to address speculation about his star quarterback.

Rumors were swirling all across the vast expanses of the Internet last night that Taylor Martinez (no relation) had quit the team. When reached by phone, Pelini told the Omaha World-Herald that Martinez is “still on the team.”

Pelini reiterated to the paper that there were no issues that would jeopardize Martinez’s status for Saturday’s home game against Colorado.

The genesis for the rumors surrounding Martinez’s status with the team appears to be a sideline confrontation between the player and coach. After returning to the sidelines from the locker room after having his ankle x-rayed, Martinez was the subject of a verbal tongue-lashing from Pelini that ended with a poke to the QB’s chest. Pelini declined to address that confrontation with the World-Herald.

So, it appears Martinez is still a member of the Cornhuskers football team. Whether or not that was the case for the entire day Sunday, however, still remains to be seen.
