Simon Monjack, the British husband of the late Hollywood actress Brittany Murphy, died of natural causes, Los Angeles police said.
Monjack, 39, was found dead on Sunday night, five months after Murphy's death and in near identical circumstances.
He collapsed at the Hollywood home which the couple once shared. Murphy's mother, Sharon, who also lived in the house, raised the alarm in an emergency call at 9.40pm.
He was pronounced dead by paramedics after rescucitation attempts failed. Police gave the preliminary cause of death as natural causes. He is believed to have suffered a heart attack.
"We concluded there are no signs of foul play or any criminal activity involved," said Sgt Alex Ortiz, spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. Sources said a number of prescription medications were found at the address.
The Los Angeles Coroner's Office has taken over the investigation.
Monjack claimed to have a history of cardiac problems. Returning from Murphy's film set in Puerto Rico last November, he collapsed on board the flight and needed medical treatment. Initally he blamed it on a heart attack, but later said he had suffered a heart attack.
Mrs Murphy also discovered her daughter's body in December 2009. The 32-year-old actress, famous for her roles in Clueless and 8 Mile, died of pneumonia, with drug intoxication as a contributing factor.
In the months following Murphy's death, Monjack's role in her life came under uncomfortable scrutiny.
A grieving Monjack made frequent, emotional telephone calls to the Press after Murphy's death, defending his character and speaking of his love for her. The couple were planning a family and a new life in New York, he said.
Monjack was questioned by investigators about Murphy's drug intake but was not considered a suspect in her death. When the coroner described Murphy's death as "preventable" and said she would still be alive if she had seen a doctor instead of self-medicating, Monjack declared himself "ridiculously upset".
His attempts to build a "legacy" for his late wife proved typically controversial. He launched the Brittany Murphy Foundation and announced plans for a celebrity fundraiser, with ticket prices of $1,000 per individual or $10,000 per corporation. Critics called the event "tacky", and Monjack called it off. It then emerged that he had not registered the foundation as a charity and promised to return all donations.
Murphy left nothing to Monjack in her will. She bequeathed her estate to her mother.
