George Michael will pay his "respects" to his late pal Dame Elizabeth Taylor by dedicating one of his London concerts to the Hollywood actress later this year (11).
The British singer announced a set of European dates for his Symphonica: The Orchestral Tour on Wednesday (11May11), his first live shows in three years.
Michael is planning to use his gig at London's iconic Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in November (11) to help raise funds for Taylor's Aids Foundation and honour her memory following her death in March (11).
He tells WENN at a press conference, "At the moment there are four opera houses booked - two of them will be for charity. The one here in the Opera House here in Covent Garden will be for charity and hopefully in honour of Elizabeth Taylor and making some contributions to her foundation... I knew her and she was such a wonderful lady and she worked so tirelessly and completely selflessly. I'd like to pay my respects in some way."
Michael also reveals he will also be working with France's First Lady and former model, Carla Bruni, to raise funds for an Aids charity she works closely with.
He adds, "She's a spokesperson for an amazing charity called (Born Hiv Free) and it seems to be stunning statistics, but she assures me they're true, but because the French take care of people in terms of health - it's so much better than other nations, including ourselves (Britain) - there were only two babies registered in France last year that were born with Hiv... That's because of a massive treatment plan which, when I heard about this charity, I was blown away by how logical it was and how many lives it was saving and how easily it could be done. So I immediately was interested in trying to associate the Parisian Opera House show with her charity."
Michael will play at the Palais Garnier in Paris, France next April (12) and the show will mark the end of the first leg of his tour.
The celebrity face of bipolar disorder has typically been, well, sort of crazy (think Britney Spears or, so it's speculated, Charlie Sheen). So when a publicist for Catherine Zeta-Jones, who has been stalwart in supporting her husband, Michael Douglas, through his battle with cancer over the past year, announced that the actress had sought treatment for bipolar II, it was a surprise to many.
"After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check in to a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her bipolar II disorder," publicist Cece Yorke said in a statement.
A friend of the actress told People Magazine that Zeta-Jones spent five days in the undisclosed facility. "Catherine has had to deal with Michael's illness and that's been hard," the friend said. "She went in for a few days because she's about to start working, and wanted to make sure she's in top form, which she is."
In announcing her illness, Zeta-Jones sheds light on the fact that many people are able to manage a successful career and a family life, along with their disorder. She also reminds us that bipolar disorder, which affects 2% to 3% of the U.S. population, exists on a spectrum, and that some forms of the illness are more severe than others.
In bipolar I, the most severe form, patients typically swing between distinct episodes of depression and mania (though some may experience both manic and depressed symptoms simultaneously), with periods of normal mood in between. During manic episodes, which may last anywhere from a week to a few months, patients experience abnormally high mood, agitation, irritability and grandiosity. They have racing thoughts, usually need very little sleep and act impulsively, having reckless sex or overspending, for instance.
During episodes of depression, which usually last longer than manic episodes — at least two weeks, but sometimes longer than a year — patients feel sad, hopeless and worthless. They have trouble concentrating or making decisions. They suffer disordered sleep and eating, and lose interest in participating in daily activities.
Some bipolar patients also suffer from psychosis, including hallucinations and delusions. But with proper treatment, patients can enjoy long periods of stable behavior.
Bipolar II is less severe than bipolar I. The key difference is that patients with bipolar II do not have full-blown manic episodes. Rather, they cycle between milder, hypomanic episodes and episodes of major depression. Women are slightly more likely to have bipolar II than men.
"One of the things people often overlook because manias and hypomanias are splashy, is that most patients with bipolar disorder spend their lives depressed," says Dr. Martin Evers, an outpatient psychiatrist and associate director of behavioral health at Northern Westchester Hospital. "The tragedy of the disorder is the depression. A lot of days of your life are lost."
For that reason, many bipolar adults — particularly those with bipolar II — are misdiagnosed with clinical depression. "People tend to seek treatment for depression, but not for mania because it feels good," Evers says.
Other forms of bipolar disorder include bipolar disorder not otherwise specified — a diagnosis that describes patients whose illness does not fit into other categories — and cyclothymic disorder, whose sufferers are typically seen as extremely moody but whose mood swings are not considered severe or lasting enough to qualify as bipolar.
Untreated bipolar disorder usually worsens over time, with episodes becoming more severe and more frequent. "Rapid cyclers" — about 20% to 25% of patients — have four or more episodes of major depression, mania, hypomania or mixed symptoms within a year. Some people experience more than one episode in a week, or even within a single day. Rapid cycling appears to be more common in people with severe illness and in those whose disease developed earlier, during their mid to late teens. Typical onset of the disorder is in the 20s.
It remains unclear when Zeta-Jones received her diagnosis, but it is important to note that many patients may go decades believing they are depressed, without realizing they have bipolar disorder.
With proper treatment, however, most people with bipolar disorder can largely control their mood swings and related symptoms, reducing their severity and relapse. Because it is a lifelong and recurrent illness, people need long-term treatment including both medication and psychotherapy, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

The story centers on a widowed and retired American philosophy professor who meets a much younger woman in Paris. They form a special relationship and rekindle the lost joy in both their lives.
Mostly Martha director Sandra Nettelbeck has adapted the novel and will direct the movie. Sandra Nettelbeck changed the French Monsieur Armand character to the American Mr. Morgan for the adaptation.

“Ron, my brother, was an embarrassment to his father when he was alive, and today he became an embarrassment to his mother,” Michael Reagan, a conservative radio host, said via Twitter.
In his new book, “My Father at 100,” Ron Jr. claims he recognized his father’s Alzheimer’s symptoms during the 1984 presidential debate against Walter Mondale. “My heart sank as he floundered his way through his responses,” Ron Jr. writes.
But Michael, appearing on CBS’ “The Early Show” yesterday, said Ron “seems to want to sell out his father to sell books.”
“All these years, I’ve listened to people like Bill Maher and other people on the left who inferred my father had Alzheimer’s when he was president of the United States to somehow discount the great job my father did as president,” Michael said. “So now, for one of his sons to come out and in fact say, ‘Yeah, he might have had Alzheimer’s . . . during that time,’ just gives credence to people like Bill Maher and others.”

Michael Grimm performed Friday night in his hometown. The Waveland native became a millionaire when he won America's Got Talent and he's using that new found fame to boost tourism in Hancock County.
Guitarists rocked out as thousands of fans anticipated Michael Grimm hitting the stage. While many ticket holders were local, some Grimm fans traveled the distance to see him.
Teresa Williams said, "Yes, I drove. I started last night about seven o'clock, and here we are."
Decked out in Grimm gear, including the infamous hat, Teresa Williams drove more than 1,000 miles from Chicago to see the singer she adores.
"He is so sweet. He is such a genuine person. He is absolutely wonderful. I mean he is adorable," said Williams.
Merchandise flew off the shelves as fans supported the Waveland native. But they were also supporting Hancock County since BP money paid for the show in hopes of boosting tourism.
Beth Carriere said, "This is the finale of the Hancock County, Mississippi production for the grant money. They have underwritten up to $310,000 for tonight's event."

"We are probably at the highest occupancy that we have been in years, and we know for a fact there is overflow in Harrison County, as well," said Carriere.

Opening with a series of samples from news broadcasts it's not too dissimilar to Tabloid Junkie, a song from his 1995 HIStory album, with Jackson tackling media paranoia and victimisation (the first line is "Everybody wanting a piece of Michael Jackson"). For all the talk of Jackson working with producers like RedOne, Will.i.am and Mark Ronson before his death, the beat that drops after the intro is dated, all synth strings and perfunctory drum claps. Having listened to Jackson's music non-stop as a teenager, the vocal comes as a shock because it doesn't really sound like him. Deeper and somehow flatter than on his last album, 2001's Invincible, it sounds like a heavily treated guide vocal. There are the obligatory "hee hees", but as the synthetic horns and vinyl scratches appear in the final third, Breaking News feels like a song Jackson wouldn't have been happy to release. There's also something strangely disturbing about lines such as "he wants to write my obituary", while the news samples at the beginning are staged to sound as if they're referring to Jackson in the past tense, as if his obsession with his mistreatment at the hands of the press continues from beyond the grave.
