The excitement that began for Menendez High School last June will hit its peak shortly after 10 on Wednesday morning. That's when football player Tony Steward's college choice — either Florida State, Clemson or a recruiting darkhorse — will be televised live on ESPN.

That doesn't mean the electric atmosphere that's been around the Menendez campus is going to subside once the cameras roll out of town. Steward is well aware that his time on national television and the exposure that it brings to the school and southern part of the county will go on beyond this week.

"I'm even happier for the school and the recognition that some of the younger players are going to get," said Steward, a five-star prospect from the Hastings area.

Menendez assistant principal Cynthia Williams sees that, too, and envisions Steward's notoriety (and that of high profile junior Menendez baseball player Avery Romero) as opening doors for more Falcons to attend college.

"The mere fact that Tony Steward has brought so much recognition from colleges coming in has helped to support and encourage kids to go to college," she said. "It is college day for all students. When you walk into our gym, you'll see (logos, banners) from a lot of colleges. I think there's just been a rejuvenated emphasis on all students going to college."

It's all been overwhelming for not only Steward, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound athlete who accounted for 11 total touchdowns and 81 tackles in an injury-shortened senior season, but for Menendez, too. The school has never been in the spotlight like this.

Since the dead recruiting period for college coaches ended, there's been a steady cycle of recruiters making their way to and from Menendez. UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel was at the school on Jan. 24; Clemson's Dabo Swinney and Florida State's Jimbo Fisher followed in the days after that. With those coaches comes notoriety and excitement that is new for everyone around -- students, teachers, coaches and administrators.

"The last week (Jimbo Fisher visited) and one of the kids got an autograph from him," Steward said. "It made his day."

Menendez coach Keith Cromwell said that the constant stream of noteworthy traffic has been a boost for many people affiliated with the program.

"When a head coach comes, he's meeting the principal, walking around the whole school," Cromwell said. "All the kids see that. There's a huge buzz. It's obviously very similar to the Army (All-American) announcement. The whole school will pretty much be shut down (Wednesday).

"He's been great, I keep telling him, 'Tony, you're doing so good.' It's overwhelming. He's ready to just finish out his senior year as a high school kid. Having all this attention focused right on him, he's handled it so well."

Wednesday morning will trump eight months of hype that began last June.

Steward was named the nation's No. 2 overall recruit by Rivals on June 1 (he enters signing day ranked 13th), and it's been a roller coaster ever since. Steward was named a U.S. Army All-American on Dec. 6 and honored as the nation's top high school linebacker by NFL Hall of Fame member Dick Butkus two days after that.

He's been all over the country touring colleges, although he's expected to choose between the two Atlantic Coast Conference schools.

"I'm pretty ready for it to be over with," Steward said. "It's been a long ride and a very enjoyable one. It has to end soon ... I've enjoyed my experience."

But something about ESPN coming to the campus for a live segment will make it more of a newsworthy feel than any other accolade.

Cromwell said that an ESPN crew is scheduled to arrive at 8 a.m. to begin prepping the gymnasium for the announcement. Students will enter a decorated gym shortly before the live portion is scheduled to begin.

And then Steward, ear piece plugged in and wearing a microphone clipped to his shirt, will become just the second county athlete to announce his college football intentions on live television. Former Nease quarterback Tim Tebow announced his decision to attend the University of Florida live on ESPNews in December 2005.

"I guess it'll be a little tougher this time with the decision," Steward said. "I think it'll be a real good experience; I can't wait to experience it Wednesday. I just hope I make everybody happy."

He passed away at midnight Wednesday night at his home in Nevada. The actor suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and was hospitalized in mid-July after he had trouble breathing.

Born Bernard Schwartz and raised in the Bronx, N.Y., to Hungarian immigrants, Curtis completed only one year of high school, spent two years in the U.S. Navy, and learned to act on the GI Bill, which led to a contract gig with Universal Studios. Graduating to bigger parts in films like 1952′s Son of Ali Baba and 1953′s Houdini, Curtis made a point of working in several genres.
As a result, his best-known films ranged from historical epics (1960′s Spartacus) to edgy noir dramas (1957′s Sweet Smell of Success) to farces (1959′s Some Like It Hot). But for every classic on his resume, he also appeared in more than his share of flops. He only earned one Oscar nomination in his seven-decade career, for the 1958 crime drama The Defiant Ones.
