After beating up Wall Street 'fat cats,' President Obama ready to take their money in NY fund-raiser
President Obama has been happy to beat up on Wall Street "fat cats," but tonight he'll be even happier to take their money.
The President is slated to headline a superswank, $50,000-per-couple fund-raiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at Manhattan's gilded St. Regis hotel on Fifth Ave.
The high-dollar affair will feature fine French food, a bevy of Wall Street titans and 23 Congress members - including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
Not everyone is thrilled that Obama and Pelosi are looking to use New York as a campaign ATM at the same time that they are trying to rein in Wall Street, the city's biggest job and tax generator by far.
At least one ex-congressional campaign committee giver said he's decided to boycott the event and will send his money to the GOP instead.
"I'm a New Yorker first," said the once loyal Dem, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of inciting the White House. "We are depending on our congresspeople to defend New York, not to just go along with Nancy Pelosi for the ride."
Kathryn Wylde, president of the business-backed Partnership for New York City, was considerably more welcoming - but still drew a link between Wall Street's health and its ability to bankroll political campaigns.
"We are really happy he's coming and hope he brings good news," said Wylde, adding pointedly, "New York's future as a place to raise money hangs in the balance!"
Organizers said they expected 185 guests to fill out St. Regis' main ballroom, where Obama will hold forth beneath a vaulted, cloud-dappled ceiling and gilded chandeliers.
Ticket prices start at $15,000 a head, or $30,000 a couple, which will get you dinner and a picture with the Prez.
Couples that shell out a full $50,000 also get to attend a VIP reception with Obama, who earlier in the day will be chatting up factory workers in Buffalo.
The food, at least, should be five-star: A topnotch lineup of chefs from the French Culinary Institute in SoHo - including Jacques Pepin, Alain Sailhac, Jacques Torres and Andre Soltner - are prepared to do the honors.
The chairman of the event is Rep. Steve Israel (D-L.I.), who earlier this year was persuaded by Obama not to run in a primary against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).
"It's always an honor to chair an event with the President of the United States," Israel said, "and it's an even bigger honor to host him in New York."

Earlier this week, CBS Sports' Clark Kellogg, the lead college basketball analyst during Saturday night's Final Four broadcast, joined President Obama and CBS "Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith on the White House basketball court. They played a game of P-O-T-U-S - like H-O-R-S-E, but with the acronym standing for "President of the United States."
The game aired Saturday night during halftime of the Butler-Michigan State game.
As they played, Kellogg asked Mr. Obama a couple questions about the president's well-known love of the game of basketball and his take on the NCAA tournament so far.
"This has been probably one of the most balanced tournaments that we've seen," Mr. Obama said, playing the role of sports analyst like he did in January when he joined Kellogg during a telecast of a Duke-Georgetown game. "Terrific excitement... when you see, like a Northern Iowa, pull off a game like they did against Kansas... that makes everybody invested in the tournament. And that's what makes March Madness terrific."
Mr. Obama also promoted the first lady's "Let's Move" campaign to fight childhood obesity.
As for the game itself, Kellogg jumped out to a big lead on the president... but then Mr. Obama got hot hitting shots from three-point range and ended up winning.

President Obama's $3.834 trillion budget, to be released today, proposes to inject billions more dollars in clean energy research while slashing federal fossil fuel subsidies, according to White House officials.
The fiscal year 2011 budget will include $6 billion for clean energy technologies, mostly focused on research, development and demonstration, the White House said.
While sending more cash to priority areas, Obama is also seeking a three-year non-military discretionary spending freeze. The move is to help trim a federal deficit that is projected at $1.3 trillion in 2011 and, without efforts to rein it in, expected to balloon further in the next decade.
Obama's budget proposal will include $20 billion-worth of more than 120 terminations, reductions, and savings. The savings are necessary to fund increases in priority areas while keeping the discretionary baseline flat, according to White House Office of Management and Budget director Peter Orzag.
To further spur a switch to clean energy and trim the deficit, the White House budget will also seek to eliminate tax preferences for oil, gas and coal companies, Orzag said. OMB says the move will raise an additional $40 billion over ten years.
The budget move comes a week after Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and American Petroleum Institute President Jack Gerard exchanged heated words, after Gerard accused the administration for actions that have led to a dramatic drop in oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters (Greenwire, Jan. 27).
The budget cuts are sure to face resistance in Congress from both sides of the aisle. In last year's budget, the White House managed to win Congressional support for 60 percent of the cuts he had proposed, officials said. In that budget, Obama also had proposed to increase fees and eliminate tax breaks for oil and gas companies to raise more than $30 billion in revenue over a decade. But not all of the measures won support from Congress.
One measure he failed push through last year was a new $4-per-acre fee on "nonproducing" oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico.
The White House characterized the budget as a responsible move in tight fiscal times. "It's not a left-wing budget. It's not a right-wing budget. It's a pragmatic budget," said one official.
They also reiterated President Obama's threat last week, during the State of the Union address, to use his veto power if Congress does not act to curb wasteful spending.

But the day is spoilt by the bizarre monkey image Google refuses to remove

Hollywood and Bollywood converged on Washington DC last night as President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama threw their first state dinner, a glittering event in honour of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur. Michelle Obama wowed guests in a glamorous strapless silver and cream-coloured sheath dress and shawl, created by the Indian-born American designer Naeem Khan.
Khan's designs have become a red-carpet choice for pop stars and actresses including Beyonce, Katherine Heigl and Carrie Underwood. The First Lady's gown took three weeks to make, with a team of 40 on the case at the designer's family workshop in India.
Michelle Obama's choice impressed the fashion critics. Mary Tomer, author of the new book Mrs O: The Face of Fashion Democracy said: "I think she looks fabulous. She walked out in something that's figure-flattering and chic. Naeem's work is known for glamour and embellishment and this dress seems to embody that."
Hal Rubenstein, fashion director for InStyle magazine, said it was a sophisticated choice, which paid homage to India without opting for a traditional sari-style dress. "The nice thing about it is the Jackie Kennedy sort of appropriateness."
The 338-strong guest list was a mix of Washington insiders, Hollywood stars and prominent figures from the Indian community in the US. Guests included directors Steven Spielberg and M Night Shyamalan and actors Blair Underwood and Alfre Woodard. Headlining the entertainment was Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winning actress and singer who is to play Winnie Mandela in an upcoming biopic. The menu, which included potato and eggplant salad, arugula from the White House garden, red lentil soup and green curry prawns, featured very little meat as Singh is vegetarian.
The day was clouded, however, by the bizarre case of a racist image of Michelle Obama appearing on Google. The image, which depicts the First Lady as a monkey, has been coming top of Google Images search results for 'Michelle Obama'. Google has apologised for the image but refused to remove it. Instead, they placed a notice over it titled Offensive Search Results, stating: "Sometimes our search results can be offensive. We agree."
But the California-based search engine giant refused to remove the picture from its search results. "Google views the integrity of our search results as an extremely important priority," a statement from the company read. "Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it." The White House has declined to comment.

In a struggling economy, retailers scramble to stock their shelves with new, attention-getting products with a high probability of selling. One of the hottest items of the year - the Chia Obama - is flying off shelves for two reasons: It's so popular it sells-out, and it's so controversial that many stores have pulled it before a single sale could be made.
