Sharapova-destroyer Arn makes Classic final

The Greta Arn fairytale continues at the ASB tennis classic in Auckland, with the world number 88 now in the tournament final tomorrow after toppling fourth seed Julia Goerges this afternoon.

Arn, who conquered Maria Sharapova in Thursday's quarterfinal, was buoyant as she overcame Goerges in straight sets after winning a first-set tiebreaker.

Arn, whose career story includes three years on the sidelines after hitting a financial crisis, just one tournament title and only $600,000 in prize money, looked a far better player than her ranking as she patiently outlasted the inaccurate Goerges.

She wasn't lying when she said: "I'm definitely playing some of the best tennis of my life."

Arn was never meant to be in the main draw here - she was third on the qualifying list but got a start when higher-ranked players dropped out, and she went quietly through the draw before she disposed of Sharapova, the biggest scalp of her career.

She again started a distant outsider against Goerges, but always looked in control of the game and was clearly superior in a one-sided second set.

She has played defending champion Yanina Wickmayer, the other finalist, only once before - and lost 6-2, 6-2 - but would anyone bet against the German-Hungarian now?
