Flying legend Amelia Earhart may have died a castaway on a tropical island and not in a Pacific plane crash in 1937.
A fragment of finger bone found with make-up from a woman’s compact on uninhabited Nikumaroro points to Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan surviving, historians said.
Ric Gillespie, of the international group for historic aircraft recovery, said: “The evidence is that Earhart and Noonan landed and eventually died there as castaways.”
