The past two seasons, UConn coach Geno Auriemma has been asked countless times to express his opinion as to whether Maya Moore or Diana Taurasi is the best player ever to play for the Huskies.
For the most part, Auriemma has either refused to answer the question, danced around it or explained that it simply couldn’t be answered until Moore was finished building her legacy.
Tuesday night, undoubtedly as he was overwhelmed by the moment in the midst of the Huskies celebrating breaking the NCAA Division I basketball record for consecutive victories, Auriemma offered up an unsolicited answer to one of the most often asked questions in the history of the program.
“You have asked a million times, ‘Who is better? Who is better? Who is better?’” Auriemma said. “How are you going to compare them? But Maya Moore has done something that no one else has ever done in the history of college basketball (other than Tiffany Hayes). She has been on a team that has won 89 straight games.
“Diana is in Turkey now probably… I don’t know what she does when she is not playing. I can only imagine. So I don’t care if she hears this or not. She has never won 89 games in a row. So when people start asking me now who is the best player in Connecticut history, I’m going to say, ‘Maya Moore.’ And she is a lot nicer kid than that wise guy over in Turkey.”
For one night at least, Moore was better. She not only led the Huskies to the national record, but she did so in spectacular style. She scored a career-high 41 points and pulled down 10 turnovers and dished out three assists all while not committing a turnover.
Florida State coach Sue Semrau said she had never seen anyone play better in the women’s game.
