With each passing day, it appears more likely the Detroit Tigers either will re-sign Magglio Ordonez or go with a Brennan Boesch-Casper Wells platoon in right field next season.
Former Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Jayson Werth became a very rich man Sunday, getting $126 million for seven years from the Washington Nationals.
And, when asked about contract negotiations with Werth, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski wrote in an e-mail to Booth Newspapers: “We were not involved.”
He did not want to tip his hand last week on interest for the remaining elite free agent outfielders, but Dombrowski’s answer on Werth also could well apply to Tampa Bay Rays free agent left fielder Carl Crawford.
Crawford is the last of the big free agent bats remaining. Detroit got designated hitter-catcher Victor Martinez (four years, $50 million) and the Chicago White Sox got outfielder-first baseman Adam Dunn (four years, $56 million) before Werth was scooped up.
The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels covet Crawford, and the New York Yankees are expected to up the ante if they don’t get pitcher Cliff Lee. So, it’s easy to see Crawford is about to become as wealthy as Werth. Don’t look for Detroit to get involved in something that pricey.
Which brings up the matter of Ordonez.
He is one of the top professional hitters in baseball, but broke his ankle July 24 and required stabilizing surgery. He turns 37 next month.
When asked Sunday if he was satisfied with Ordonez’s recovery, Dombrowski wrote in an e-mail: “We cannot discuss his health by law.” And Dombrowski has refused to discuss Ordonez since he became a free agent last week. Though, before that, Dombrowski and Ordonez had expressed interest in him remaining a Tiger.
Ordonez batted .303 with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs in 84 games last year, falling well short of the starts or plate appearances required to vest a $15 million contract for 2011. So, he is up for grabs.
Will the Tigers grab Ordonez, or will he replace Werth in Philadelphia or end up elsewhere?
His agent, Scott Boras, will be focusing on finding Ordonez a good home this week in meetings with prospective general managers at the luxury suites in the Walt Disney Dolphin Resort.
Baseball’s winter meetings commence today and last through Thursday at this palace a short drive from the Magic Kingdom.
