Keeping a cap on excitement

JESSICA Capshaw is famous for being actor Kate Capshaw's daughter and the stepdaughter of Hollywood heavyweight Steven Spielberg.

She's also renowned for playing Dr Arizona Robbins, the on again-off again partner of Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) in Grey's Anatomy.

Capshaw hates a plot spoiler, so is cagey when it comes to questions about her on-screen exploits and whether Arizona will relocate to Africa.

Can you tell us where your character is going?

Do you like to look around the corner and see what is coming or do you like to have it pop out? Sometimes we approach the writer and go, "OK, can you tell me a little bit? ... no, don't tell me".

When did you find out you were going to become a cast regular?

June 12, 2009. I had a contract but, you know, you don't know what is going to happen. At the end (of the 2009 season), I was like, "I hope, I hope (to stay)". I think Shonda (creator Shonda Rhimes) had a particular glee in calling me because everyone else kind of knew that they were going to be picked up again. I screamed a lot (when Rhimes called). I was driving, it was dangerous.
How well have you settled here?

You know, I was really, really nervous because I came for three episodes after having auditioned twice for the show and not having gotten it. So by the time I got here, it was for three episodes and I kind of just put my head down and did my job. And I was like, "Don't get attached, don't like everyone too much, just do your job". Because this is a crazy business and everything can change really quickly. Of course, by my fourth episode I had completely fallen in love with everyone. And every time I got to work with another character, I sort of fell in love deeper and deeper. By the end of the year I was a hot mess. I was thinking, "This is going to be really tough if I don't get to stay".

You work a lot with kids in the show ...

Yeah, a blessing and a curse.
