Heritage Hall’s Sanders questionable
It was a big emotional lift for Heritage Hall to have junior running back Barry J. Sanders back in the lineup last week.
But physically, Sanders wasn’t the same. He entered the game averaging more than 11 yards per carry. He averaged less than three yards per carry against Bridge Creek and reinjured his foot. Sanders did not practice Monday.
“He wants to be back out there so bad, and he has such a great attitude,” coach Andy Bogert said. “But right now I would have to say he is questionable.”
Sanders injured his foot in Week 6 and returned for the first time last week. He wasn’t as explosive on his cuts, but he was still able to catch a 25-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to start the scoring for the Chargers.
The good news for Heritage Hall is that junior wide receiver Sterling Shepard is getting closer to 100 percent. He is practicing with the team and is expected to play Friday in the Class 3A quarterfinal game vs. Spiro.
HALFTIME TURNAROUND SPURS DOUGLASS
Several big plays in the second half enabled Douglass to blow past Oologah in the Class 4A quarterfinals last Friday, but the Trojans weren’t so crisp in the first half.
The defense allowed only three points, but the offense lost four fumbles before halftime.
“We had to look at ourselves and ask, ‘Was it them or was it us?’” Douglass coach Willis Alexander said. “The offense didn’t play well in the first half, but sooner or later, we turned it on and made plays when we had to.”
Running back Aliston Cobb helped the offensive turnaround, rushing for 117 of his 138 yards on seven second-half carries. For the season, he has 1,972 yards and 27 touchdowns on just 168 attempts.
The third-ranked Trojans (10-2), winners of 10 straight, can’t afford a lackluster half vs. No. 1 Broken Bow (12-0).
The 4A semifinal will be Friday night at Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant.
UNION’S WEAVER COMING HOME
Lawton will have a lot of west-side fans in its corner Friday vs. Tulsa Union, but one Redskin is coming home.
Wide receiver Stephon Weaver grew up two blocks from Putnam City High and started playing in the PCO football league when he was 7. Some of the other players on those teams were Yukon running back Terry Jones and former Star Spencer quarterback Franky Jamison.
Weaver moved to Tulsa before fifth grade, but he has a lot of family in the Oklahoma City area.
The Wolverines (12-0) play Union (11-1) at Putnam City Stadium in the semifinals.
CHAMPIONSHIP TICKETS ONLINE
Tickets to the state championship football games can be purchased online, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association announced Monday.
The Class 6A-4A, B and C championships will be next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3-4. The following week will be the championships for 3A-A. The Class 6A-A title games will be at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater. The Class B and C championships will be at a site to be determined.
